Pompe Disease

What began as a simple challenge amongst friends and family to raise awareness of Pompe Disease using the Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge as a platform, has evolved into a charity initiative which seeks to help as many children with rare genetic diseases, such as Pompe Disease, receive the related treatment.

Pompe disease is a progressive, debilitating, and often, fatal neuromuscular disorder. Individuals who are affected by the disease possess a genetic defect that causes an absence or deficiency of the enzyme Acid Alpha-Glucosidase (GAA) in the lysosome of cells. This enzyme is required for the breakdown of glycogen in the cells. In patients with Pompe disease, lack of the GAA enzyme results in accumulation of glycogen within the cells and in turn muscle damage occurs in the cardiac, skeletal, and respiratory muscles and tissues. Over time, this progressive deterioration of muscle function leads to premature death due to cardiac or respiratory failure.

Reach for a Dream

For 24 years the Reach for a Dream Foundation has brought hope, joy and healing to countless South African children. These children, between the ages of 3 and 18 years, have used their dreams to fight life-threatening illnesses such as cancer and leukaemia, cystic fibrosis, muscular dystrophy, renal failure and various blood disorders.

Reach for a Dream seeks to alleviate the strain that a life-threatening illness places on these children, and their families, by providing the children with the opportunity to realise their dreams. In addition, Reach for a Dream offers these children a magical moment to regain their childhood that is being lost to an illness.
